During the online exchange with students of the Universty of Georgia that took place during the planning of the teaching sequence, I learnt and even implemented new things to my teaching sequence.
First of all, this kind of exchanges gives you a chance to use your language with native speakers, which is essential for us as English teachers. In the best of the cases, you can make an online friend and keep in touch with him or her but, unfortunately, it was not my case.
Basically, what I implemented to my sequence through our online meetings was the use of coupons in the role play. She told me that it is very common in USA to use coupons in supermarkets in order to get a discount on some products. Consequently, I asked her to show me some of those coupons and I implemented them to my role play.
In addition to that, this experience has helped me to decide some things I was not sure about like for example if I should be the shop assistant, or a student should take this role. Talking to her I could compare different points of view and also different opinions from the ones I usually hear with people I know.
Finally, I have to say that it is a very good way to learn of other cultures. In that case, American culture is not too different from Spanish culture but I have to confess that I discover something about American supermarkets. She told me that there are self check-out counters where people can pay to a machine by marking the products they have. This was quite impressive for me because people can steal easily but they do not do it. Consequently, I am very glad of having done this online exchange and I encourage everybody to look for online partners in that kind of situations where both people can help the other one with a task or whatever.
